Becoming an Animal Keeper

City of Los AngelesScheepmaker's Crowned Pidgeon

All staff in the areas of animal care, administration, grounds maintenance, construction, admissions, education, and public relations are employees of the City of Los Angeles. The hiring of staff for full-time city-funded positions at the Los Angeles Zoo is governed by the Civil Service Selection Process. The system was created to provide a fair, equitable, and job-related way for applicants to compete for jobs with the City of Los Angeles.

All applicants for full-time city-funded jobs at the Los Angeles Zoo must pass a Civil Service examination, the requirements of which are established by the City Personnel Department in conjunction with the Zoo.

Candidates must apply to the Los Angeles City Personnel Department in order to be considered for a vacant position. Candidates are given the examination for their specific job by the Personnel Department. All candidates who pass the examination are placed on a list of eligible candidates.

Zoo staff interviews eligible candidates and chooses the candidate to fill the position. Once hired, each employee must pass a six-month probationary period.

For more information on the city's hiring practices, and for a list of vacant city-funded Zoo positions, please visit their website at http://www.cityofla.org/SubMenu/JobsAvailable/index.htm.
