Press Room: Los Angeles Zoo Hippopotamus Passes Away

Contact: Jason Jacobs, (323) 644-4273

The Los Angeles Zoo is saddened to announce the death of a 28 year old male hippopotamus, Jabba. Jabba had been under veterinary care for the past month and was not responding to treatment. On Friday, January 20, staff made the difficult decision to euthanize him.

Jabba arrived at the Los Angles Zoo in 2009. Prior to his arrival in L.A., Jabba lived at the San Diego Zoo for many years where he sired several calves. His body will be transported to the California Animal Health & Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory for a complete necropsy.
