The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a world leader in the study, appreciation, and conservation of birds, partners with the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) for a special presentation by Dr. John Fitzpatrick on citizen science and the vital roles that birds play in fostering conservation of worldwide biological diversity, taking place on Tuesday, May 18, 6 pm, at the Los Angeles Zoo's Witherbee Auditorium.

Fitzpatrick addresses how new technologies, especially the Internet, offer citizens unprecedented and unlimited opportunities to provide real scientific data that answers important questions about bird populations around the world.  His other topic includes the question "With humans beginning to serve as biosphere sensors, do we also have the will to self-correct?  Birds can motivate us to do so and serve as an excellent barometer for measuring our success."

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a membership institution dedicated to interpreting and conserving the earth’s biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds.  Fitzpatrick is the Louis Agassiz Director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University.

This event is presented by GLAZA, which for more than four decades has successfully supported the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens as an international leader in the preservation of endangered species and a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife.  As a major cultural and entertainment resource for Southern California, the Zoo is a place of beauty and inspiration and a catalyst for discovery of the natural world for children of all ages.  GLAZA funds Los Angeles Zoo exhibits, plant and animal species conservation, capital projects, and education and community outreach programs.  GLAZA currently has 72,000 member households, the largest membership base of a cultural organization in Los Angeles, and boasts a volunteer corps of over 900.

Admission is $8 for GLAZA members and $10 for nonmembers.
