L.A. Zoo Celebrates the New Year

The Los Angeles Zoo houses over 1,100 animals from around the globe and while the Zoo doesn’t display any badgers or cardinals, in honor of the big game in Pasadena the Zoo is offering a discount for visitors who wear the logos from the University of Wisconsin or Stanford University. In honor of our local college football teams, the discount will also be valid for guests wearing the logos of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of Southern California (USC). Visitors wearing the logos can receive $2 off adult admission or $1 off child admission through Sunday, January 6, 2013.

Baby Monkey Born

The Zoo’s newest addition, a colobus monkey was born on December 21, 2012. Found throughout the forests of central Africa, the colobus is one of the most striking primates in the animal kingdom. Adult Kikuyu colobus monkeys have black bodies trimmed with long white mantles. Infant colobus monkeys are born all white and do not start to get their black trim until about three and one half months of age. Colobus monkeys live in highly cohesive social groups. Thus, the infant is enjoying attention from its father, mother and other troop members.

Nearly 1.6 million guests have visited the Zoo in 2012, which marks the year the Zoo added several new residents and exhibits, including the most high profile of which is the LAIR-Living Amphibians Invertebrates and Reptiles which opened in March. The LAIR features over 60 species including the Chinese giant salamander, false gharial, mang shan viper, bushmaster, Mexican giant horned lizard and the fly river turtle. Other new animals at the Zoo include 15 baby goats in the Contact Yard and lesser kudu, a species of antelope from Africa.
