Tina interacting with an enrichment item in her new habitat

  • An elephant can eat 330 pounds of food every day!
  • Although males usually live alone, sometimes they form groups called bachelor herds.
  • Elephants can communicate with other elephants that are 2 miles away using infrasound—noises too low in pitch for humans to hear.
  • Elephant trunks are very heavy! Sometimes elephants will rest their trunks on their tusks.
  • Elephants have dominant tusks, meaning they are right-tusked or left-tusked, just as you are right-handed or left-handed.
  • Asian elephants have one “finger” at the tip of their trunks, which is useful for holding things. African elephants, on the other hand, have two “fingers.”
  • Each viewing area of Elephants of Asia offers a completely different perspective, as if you were looking out into the wild. Make sure you check out each area!
  • In Elephants of Asia, the elephants can bathe themselves without any help from Animal Keepers due to the state-of-the-art pools.
  • Did you know that Asian elephants are a flagship species? This means that if we protect these elephants’ natural environment, we can save many species in addition to the elephants!
  • When an elephant herd feels threatened, the adults will form a tight circle around the calves.
