The City of Los Angeles, Department of the Zoo, has two part-time openings in the Construction and Maintenance Division.
TITLE: Maintenance and Construction Helper
SALARY: $19.00 per hour
HOURS: Approximately 20 hours a week. Hours will vary between 6:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
DUTIES: The Maintenance and Construction Helper will work closely with the Zoo’s construction staff (plumbers, electricians, painters, air conditioning mechanics, and masonry and cement workers) to perform semi-skilled manual tasks and repair activities using various hand and power tools; assist various maintenance and construction crafts with a variety of tasks.
REQUIREMENTS: A general knowledge of the methods and materials used in building and general construction work; a general knowledge of safety practices and procedures; a general knowledge of small hand tools, small power equipment and gasoline engines; the ability to read and follow instructions; the ability to understand symbols and terms used on drawings and sketches of construction jobs; and the ability to recognize and understand the use of plumbing fittings; and the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with other employees and the public.
One year of full-time paid experience in work related to construction, craft, or maintenance and repair is preferred. One year of education in a relevant field may be substituted for the work experience requested.
Physical Requirements: Strength to perform average lifting up to 70 pounds and occasionally over 70 pounds.
