Public Relations Manager

Title: Public Relations Manager
Division: Marketing and Public Relations
Reports to: Vice President (VP), Marketing
Status: Full time, Exempt

The PR Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing public relations efforts for the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens and GLAZA to generate media coverage with the goals of increasing awareness, community engagement, positive brand affinity, and ultimately, attendance and revenue. The PR Manager will work directly with the VP, Marketing to plan and implement annual strategies and manage day-to-day publicity activities. This is a highly visible role within the organization and requires the ability to effectively communicate, as well as collaborate and build consensus among different cross-functional groups and teams.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute public relations strategies and campaigns
  • Seek opportunities to communicate what GLAZA and the Zoo are and what they do
  • Prepare media alerts and press releases, develop media kits, conduct media outreach, monitor and proactively manage media coverage
  • Create and implement a public relations plan for visibility of GLAZA and Zoo leadership
  • Organize media events including organizing spokespersons, animals and venues
  • Respond to media inquiries
  • Develop strong relationships with local and national media contacts
  • Develop and pitch long lead human-interest stories that advance the mission of the organization, as well as secure tactical event coverage
  • Develop content and messages that reinforce the significance and relevancy of the Zoo, while reaching and attracting the broad demographic of the Los Angeles community
  • Professionally and confidently respond to difficult and challenging PR issues
  • Engage and manage social media influencers, including celebrities and Zoo Ambassadors
  • Conduct media training for staff and brand ambassadors
  • Arrange speaking opportunities for staff, prepare talking points, supervise interviews conducted with staff
  • Coordinate with agency personnel
  • Provide support in social media channels
  • Conceptualize activities that build excitement about the Zoo experience, drive visitation and generate positive word-of-mouth referrals
  • Serve as spokesperson, representing the LA Zoo and GLAZA
  • Supervise outreach events at different venues and complementary organizations
  • Assist in the annual planning and management of programming, such as a speaker series and film series, to further the brand mission and exposure across multiple audiences
  • Track media coverage and follow industry trends
  • Prepare and submit PR reports, including analysis
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Minimum 6-8 years of experience in PR role
  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or related field
  • Experience managing media relationships and have a full understanding of media needs
  • Develop and maintain database of media relations contacts
  • Able to act as spokesperson for the Zoo, representing the Zoo on camera and in interviews
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written, verbal and presentation format
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Spanish fluency highly desirable
  • Be proactive, reliable, responsible and accurate with an attention to detail
  • Strong project management and organizational skills: must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, work within a fast-paced environment with rapidly shifting priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work as a team member, including supporting event execution
  • Able to work evenings, holidays and weekends as needed, including all GLAZA galas
  • Excellent computer skills: Proficient in MS Office Suite, media monitoring tools, Google Analytics, project management software and social media
  • Familiarity with video/photo editing is a plus
  • Ability to lift moderate loads using proper safety techniques
  • Ability to move around Zoo grounds on a daily basis
  • Ability to work extensively on computers and telephones
  • Possession of a California Class C Driver License and appropriate insurance
