Social Media Specialist

Title: Social Media Specialist
Division: Marketing and Public Relations
Reports to: Public Relations Manager
Status: Full Time, exempt



The Social Media Specialist will be responsible for developing social media strategies, content creation, publishing, and community management for the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens in order to cultivate engagement, brand awareness, generate inbound traffic to the web site, execute campaigns that are integrated with the overall advertising and marketing efforts, build a social media referral network and ultimately, drive attendance and revenue. This role is part of the internal Marketing and Communications team and reports to the Public Relations Manager.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize and implement social media content strategies and campaigns for the L.A. Zoo social media networks including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Write and edit content for social media channels as well as digital and print publications while maintaining the editorial calendar
  • Actively and sensitively engage followers, moderate commenters, and respond to customers on a daily basis to cultivate a loyal and connected fan base
  • Analyze, interpret, and report on social media metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns to guide strategy and implementation of new campaigns
  • Provide a daily digest report of social media activity created internally and highlighting significant trends in comments and UGC.
  • Consult with the Marketing Manager to implement select paid campaign strategy for select platforms
  • Identify and engage with social media channels of complementary organizations and entities to expand and strengthen the L.A. Zoo social media audience
  • Plan and execute influencer events to generate positive word-of-mouth
  • Monitor external review sites such as Yelp, TripAdvisor, Viator, etc. to ensure destination descriptions are accurate and complaints are addressed
  • Coordinate with internal staff on a comprehensive, integrated content strategy
  • Design visual content including memes, backgrounds, headers, profile images, etc.
  • Produce photographic and video content for use in social media
  • Implement and manage social media contests and promotions
  • Attend evening and weekend events to generate social media content in real time to support a dynamic and interactive social media presence
  • Monitor social media sentiment
  • Monitor industry topics and mentions, keeping management informed
  • Monitor and recommend trends in social media platforms, tools and applications to ideate and recommend new social media and digital marketing strategies to reach and grow our diverse demographic
  • Other duties, as assigned

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Minimum 3-4 years of experience in social media management
  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Social Media, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or related field
  • Excellent creative writing skills
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, etc.), trends, and the appropriate utilization of each to reach different objectives
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format, and build and maintain relationships
  • Exercise superior judgment in tone and quality of communications with our audience. Respond sensitively to objections from commenters
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and ensure timely action
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of social media management platforms (Sprout Social, etc.), social media analytics, Google analytics, HTML, Photoshop, Google Analytics, Prezi, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, Excel and Word
  • Ability to capture and edit quality photographic images and video for use online
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Creative thinker with a passion for communicating via social media
  • Interest in expanding social media skills and becoming more involved in strategy development
  • Ability to anticipate and prevent problems; ability to craft workable solutions to problems that arise
  • Willingness to work as a team member, including supporting events execution, working evenings, holidays, and weekends as needed, including all GLAZA galas
  • Demonstrated ability to remain in a stationary position in an office environment and to focus on a computer screen for extended periods during the day
  • Demonstrated ability to cover Zoo grounds on a frequent basis
