This species namesake buck teeth are specifically designed to pick scales off of other fish. With especially strong jaws, bucktooth tetras have been seen attacking fish whose scales are particularly shiny. Tetras are relatively small fish who fiercely defend their territory, forming schools of eight or more individuals.
