Animal Management Programs
As an institution accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), the L.A. Zoo plays an active role in collaborative efforts to ensure that animal populations are healthy and sustainable. Below you’ll find information on the processes we employ.
Species Survival Plans (SSPs):
These programs carefully manage species to maintain a healthy and self-sustaining captive populations that are both genetically diverse and demographically stable.
Each SSP includes a Studbook and Breeding and Transfer Plan that identifies population management goals and recommendations. Participation includes cooperating with other institutions, increasing public awareness, conducting research, and training professionals.
