City of Los Angeles

The hiring of staff for full-time, city-funded positions at the Los Angeles Zoo is governed by the Civil Service Selection Process. The system was created to provide a fair, equitable, and job-related way for applicants to compete for jobs with the City of Los Angeles.

All applicants who are interested in full-time employment with the City must pass a Civil Service examination, the requirements of which are established by the City’s Personnel Department in conjunction with the Zoo.  All candidates who pass the examination are placed on a list of eligible candidates, in order of their scores on the examination.  When the Zoo has a vacant regular position it intends to fill, it will request the certification of the eligible list.

Zoo staff interviews eligible candidates and chooses the candidate to fill the position. Once hired, each employee must pass a six-month probationary period. Some classifications require a longer probationary period. For more information on the city’s hiring practices and examinations currently open for filing, please visit the City of Los Angeles website.

Part-time and seasonal positions are filled directly by the Los Angeles Zoo. Vacant part-time and seasonal positions will be listed on the Careers page.
