Vaccine Verification Policy FAQ
All guests 12 and older are required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of entering the Zoo. Guests 18 and older must also provide a matching photo I.D. As per our Code of Conduct, we expect all our guests, staff, and volunteers to treat one another—as well as Zoo animals and wildlife—with respect and care. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience as we navigate this new policy.
How do I show proof of vaccination when I arrive?
Before guests can access the Zoo, staff is required to check the guest’s proof of full vaccination. For those guests who appear to be 18 years of age or older, the Zoo must cross check the proof of vaccination status with photo identification. Guests have the option of providing proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours before entry.
One of the following options will demonstrate proof of vaccination:
- vaccination card issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or similar documentation issued by another foreign governmental agency, such as the World Health Organization
- photocopy of a vaccination card or a photograph stored on a phone or electronic device
- personal digital COVID-19 vaccine record issued by the State of California, or similar documentation issued by another state, local, or foreign governmental jurisdiction, or by a private company
In general, an individual is considered fully vaccinated:
- 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
- 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine
How do I show proof of a negative COVID-19 test when I arrive?
A printed document, email, or text message displayed on a phone from a test provider or laboratory that shows results of a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) or Antigen COVID-19 test that was conducted within 72 hours before entry. The printed document, email, or text message must include the person’s name, type of test performed, date of the test, and negative test result. Home testing kit results will not be accepted for entry.
The City and County of L.A. are providing free COVID-19 tests at drive-thru, walk-up and mobile testing sites. For more information and to find a site near you, visit the County of L.A. website.
What is considered acceptable photo I.D.?
Guests 18 and older must provide a photo I.D. along with proof of vaccination card or negative COVID-19 test result. The following are acceptable forms of I.D.
- Driver’s license
- Government issued identification card
- School or work identification card
What kind of COVID-19 test will be accepted?
A negative COVID-19 test result (molecular, PCR, or antigen) that was administered by an official testing center. Test results (digital or printed) must be dated no more than 72 hours prior to entry. Home testing kit results will not be accepted for entry. The printed document, email or text message must include the person’s name, type of test performed, date of the test, and negative test result.
Will those who are under the age of 12 be permitted to visit the Zoo?
Yes, persons under the age of 12 are exempt from this policy and may enter without proof of vaccination. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a fully vaccinated adult.
If I want to eat at the Zoo restaurants, do I need to be fully vaccinated?
Indoor dining is closed. Take out at the restaurants is still permitted.
How does this affect my Membership?
If you are a current GLAZA member and you will not be fulfilling the vaccination requirements or providing proof of a COVID-19 test prior to visiting, you may be entitled to a pro-rated refund, depending on the time remaining on your membership. To find out more about how we can help you with your existing membership and possible changes based on the City’s vaccination verification policy, please contact our Membership Team at [email protected].
Does proof of vaccination have to be provided prior to ticket purchase?
Proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is required at the point of entry to the Zoo. If you pre-purchase a ticket and you don’t have proof of vaccine or a recent negative COVID-19 test (taken within 72 hours of your visit), you will be unable to enter the Zoo. This will be communicated at time of online booking and ticket purchase. No refunds will be provided for those unable to produce the required documents.
If I previously had COVID-19 and did not get vaccinated, can I visit the Zoo?
No. Having previously tested positive for COVID-19 does not preclude you from the requirements of this policy to be fully vaccinated or provide proof of negative COVID-19 test.
Are masks required?
The current L.A. County Public Health Department order mandating face masks indoors and while on public transportation remains in place and all guests must continue to wear a face mask inside the LAIR, restaurants, gift shops, restrooms, and while riding the Safari Shuttle regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status.
